Search just split into two surfaces.
There is the old surface, the traditional results page where ten blue links compete for a click. And there is the new one, the answer surface, where an assistant reads the web for the reader and hands back a single composed answer with a few named sources.
The answer surface converts far better per citation. By the time someone reads your name inside an AI answer, the assistant has already pre-qualified them: it understood the question, found you relevant, and vouched for you. That is a warmer introduction than any cold click from a results page.
Most people still optimize only for the old surface. They tune titles and chase backlinks while the answer surface sits wide open, with far less competition for the citations that increasingly drive real traffic and trust.
This playbook is about earning AI citations deliberately. It is the same generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization work, treated as a repeatable process instead of luck.
The method I used on my own site.
I built this from what actually worked on a small site of my own. AI citations went from around 18 to 163 in about two weeks once I shaped the pages like answers, leaned into the listicle and comparison format, and made the site genuinely machine-readable. This playbook is that process written down so you can repeat it, nothing more and nothing inflated.
Six phases, in order.
The sequence matters. Find the questions, shape the pages, lead with the format that gets cited, then make the whole site readable to machines and measure what lands.
Find the questions worth answering — Map the real demand
Build pages shaped like answers — Lead with the answer, structure for parsing
The listicle and comparison format — The highest-leverage play
Make your site machine-readable — Let the AI crawlers in
Measure what is actually working — Read the citations
Compound the advantage — Refresh, expand, stay honest
The full playbook is one plain markdown file. Enter your email above to get it, then paste it into your favourite AI assistant and have it apply each phase to your own site.
The whole method in six lines.
If you only remember one thing from each phase, remember these. The downloadable file expands every one into concrete steps.
Find the questions worth answering
List the real recommendation, definitional, and decision questions in your space.
Build pages shaped like answers
State the answer in the first 100 words, structure it so a machine can parse it.
The listicle and comparison format, the highest-leverage play
The "best [category] for [audience] in [year]" list, executed with real per-entry assessment.
Make your site machine-readable
Let the AI crawlers in (including at the CDN edge), add valid honest structured data, serve a clean markdown layer.
Measure what is actually working
Read citations in your webmaster console and treat the grounding questions as a content map.
Compound the advantage
Refresh current-year pages, expand the winning format with depth intact, keep answers honest and specific.
For anyone who wants to be the source AI cites.
Senior engineers, founders, marketers, and writers running a content site, documentation site, personal site, or product site. If your readers now ask an assistant first, this is for you.
You run a content site
You publish guides, reviews, or analysis and you want assistants to cite your work when readers ask the questions you already answer. GEO turns that traffic loss from AI summaries into citation gains.
You run a documentation or product site
When someone asks an assistant how to do something with your product or category, you want your docs to be the grounded source. The same tactics that earn AI citations earn qualified product interest.
You run a personal or expert site
Senior engineers, founders, marketers, and writers who want to be the named source. Being cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity is the new version of ranking first, and it compounds faster.
Questions before you start.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking on a results page where the reader still has to click and choose. Generative engine optimization (GEO) optimizes for being the source an AI assistant cites inside its answer. SEO earns the ranking; GEO earns the citation, and the two reinforce each other.
Which AI engines can cite my content?
ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI overviews, and the growing list of assistants built on top of them. Most of them ground their answers in live web content and name their sources, which is exactly the surface this playbook targets so you can get cited by ChatGPT and get cited by Perplexity.
Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers?
Allow them if you want to be cited. AI citations depend on crawlers actually reaching your content, and many sites block them by accident at the CDN edge. The playbook shows you how to confirm the major AI crawlers can read your pages and your clean markdown layer.
How long does it take to start getting cited?
Faster than traditional ranking. On the site this method came from, AI citations rose from roughly 18 to 163 in about two weeks once the answer-shaped pages and machine-readable layer were in place. Your timeline depends on how much demand exists for the questions you answer.
Is this different from answer engine optimization, AEO?
GEO and AEO describe the same goal from two angles: being the source that AI answer engines surface and cite. This playbook covers both AI search optimization and answer engine optimization under one repeatable process, so the label matters less than the tactics.
Two playbooks, one funnel.
One earns the ranking on the traditional results page; the other earns the citation on the AI answer surface. Run them together.
