I keep writing here about owning your distribution, so it seems fair to show you what that has actually looked like for me, and what the data says about which parts worked.

Over the past few months I have been building my own website traffic with channels running in parallel. Organic social by posting and contributing to articles (mostly on Reddit and X), SEO and the AI visibility work I have written about at length, few directory listings (helping mainly with brand trust building and backlinks) and a set of free resources sitting on my site, doing the top of funnel job.

This week I crunched the numbers to see which of those channels actually pulled the most traffic and attention to my website.

The findings align fairly well with the saying that value is what brings attention as roughly six out of ten people who ended up in my audience came in through a free resource I have on my website.

I think the results and what I am about to write in the next paragraphs align well with almost any business trying to build a channel in 2026.

The numbers in a snapshot

  • About 6 in 10 arrived through a specific free resource.

  • A third came through one single resource.

  • In the strongest week, arrivals ran about 10 times my normal rate.

  • The month after that peak, they fell to roughly a tenth of it.

That last number matters as much as the first one, and I will come back to it.

What each channel actually did

Organic social brought attention in bursts as the effort needs to be sustained in order for the channel to work. The effect normally fades within days after you stop posting as the algorithm on any platform incentivizes for content freshness and volume.

SEO and AI visibility turned out to be the slowest and the most durable. Pages I published months ago still bring people in without me touching them. This is the part that compounds, and it is why I keep writing about it.

Directories did roughly what I expected and no more.. They basically build trust about your brand and can act as a backlink towards your website. Given what they actually brought I would treat them as low priority and definitely have them but wouldn’t rush toward them immediately.

Free resources did the actual conversion. This is where the six in ten number in the title came from. And when I looked at how people reached those pages, most of them came through the other three channels first. Social and search brought people to the resources. The resources are what turned a visitor into a relationship.

That is the mechanic worth understanding when it comes to creating a funnel. The first three channels create attention. Only one of them converted it into something I own. This is a problem that many business owners have as they focus only on attention without taking care of the conversion part of that attention.

Why value first works

There is a natural gap between creating the attention towards your channel and for that attention to actually convert into a lead, customer or at least to have some trust relationship with your business. And to be honest, it is easy to miss the connection when you are on the inside of your own business and grinding for your next customer.

A generic mention of your brand online or an invitation to check your brand out is asking that prospect to have implicit trust in you and your business. You are asking them to imagine what they will get and decide it is worth handing over something of theirs, whether that is an email address, a follow, or a phone call.

A specific, genuinely useful thing given away first inverts that. The value arrives before the ask. There is less imagination involved and more concrete actions.

For me that took the form of free .md files people could use immediately in their projects and themselves with things that have worked for me. For a consultancy business it might be a real audit template. For a product business it might be a free trial of the tool your customers actually need before they are ready to buy. For a local service it might be a market analysis/comparison or a guide about growth in the region. The mechanics about this lead magnet approach is the same between all business types when you are looking at it from a funnel point of view.

The part nobody warns you about

There is also the reality of this approach. It acts like a spike for your business. It is a fire that needs constant wood in order to keep the heat up.

If the action is not sustained (either with constant attention towards that lead magnet or new lead magnets created), within a month, arrivals were back to a fraction of that peak week.

But looking closer, something more useful showed up.

The resource pages are assets that did not stop converting traffic that comes from the other organic channels like SEO/AEO/GEO. One of them has brought people in every single month since April. The traffic reaching those pages now arrives through search and through AI assistants, which is the same compounding effect I keep writing about from the visibility side.

So the real lesson sits elsewhere. A specific, genuinely useful asset keeps working after you stop pushing it, while social bursts and launch noise stop the moment you do.

What this means if you are building a channel

Five things I would tell anyone doing this now, whatever the business:

  1. Separate your attention channels from your conversion asset. Social and search create attention. Giving back something valuable is what converts it. Most people run the first two and skip the third.

  2. Solve one narrow problem completely. The specific assets keep working. The broad, general ones do nothing.

  3. Make it usable rather than readable. Something people run, follow, fill in, or copy beats something they skim and forget.

  4. Put it where the problem is already being discussed. Two relevant places beat ten irrelevant ones.

  5. Expect the spike of traffic to fade as soon as you stop pushing it forward. One resource would get you attention for few days to a week. A library of resources is a system that start compounding and would bring more and more value.

That last point is the one I got wrong, and it is exactly why my own numbers dipped through July as I haven’t kept adding asset value and only informational value.

What this looks like in practice

Everything I give away is free and ungated, and you are welcome to look at them as examples of the shape as much as for what is in them. Same pattern in each: one narrow problem, solved end to end, in something you can actually use today.

If you are building something similar for your own business and want a second opinion on whether it is specific enough to work, hit reply and tell me what you have in mind. I am glad to take a look or even have a call together.

The One Thing

Attention and ownership are two different things, and most people only build for the first one. Social and search create attention. Something genuinely valuable, given away before you ask for anything, is what converts that attention into a relationship you own. Six in ten of the people in my audience arrived that way, and the assets that brought them are still working months later without me touching them.

Build the thing that keeps working when you stop pushing it.

What I'm Thinking About This Week

How much of this is a reaction to how noisy everything has become. There is more content than anyone can read and more of it arriving every day. The only reliable way through that noise seems to be usefulness that is specific enough to be undeniable. That feels like a healthier basis for a business than being loud.

Reply to this email with one of:

  • What was the last genuinely useful thing you gave away, and did anyone use it? How did you capture the traffic from that resource?

  • Do you know which of your channels actually converts attention into ownership? Most platforms track this and hardly anyone looks.

  • What narrow problem could you solve completely, in one page, for the people you want to reach?

What resonated? What did I get wrong? Hit reply: I read everything and I'm building this with you and with your input.

P.P.S. Know someone posting steadily and wondering why none of it accumulates into anything? Forward this. The gap is usually one specific, useful asset. They can subscribe at thesovereigntechnologist.com.

That’s all for this week.

See you next Thursday.
